There are two types of listings and a third paid option.

1) Directory Listing

This listing is done in a hierarchy. You look for Lawyers:Business:Illinois. This is most commonly used on Yahoo. It is used most often by people who are trying to narrow down searches to content located in their area (i.e. Yahoo Chicago). This listing is done by a free submission. You just have to know where to go, what to do and key things to make your site more pertinent to listings of these types.

2) Content Searches

This is where you type a search into Google or Yahoo and you are listed in order of relevance. You, I and those other companies have no control over this. It is controlled by BOTS (search programs) that scour the internet and rank sites based on content and meta tags (Code written into your web pages). The only thing you can do here is make sure the code is in spec so the BOTS (once they hit your site), get a true picture of the content of your site.

3) Sponsored Links

This is where you pay for clicks. For example, you can bid on a keyword (i.e. Chicago Lawyer). Every time someone searches that sequence your ad comes up in the left column of Google or Yahoo (two different systems). You only pay when the item is clicked (not seen or views), and you set a daily or monthly budget ($5 a day or $50 a month etc.). These work great especially if you have a nationally selling product or service, but you can narrow the field (i.e. Chicago Lawyer).
